History Museum on the Square honors Springfield's past, including the Birthplace of Route 66 and the first Wild West shoot-out site. There are eight dedicated galleries in 18,000 square feet of exhibit space. The six permanent galleries include Native Crossroads at the Spring; Trains, Trolleys and Transportation; Pioneers and Founders at the Crossroads; Civil War in Springfield; Will Hickok and the American West; and Birthplace of Route 66.
Here are a few of the many highlights of the museum:
* An interactive touchscreen map of Springfield allowing visitors to tap a location on the screen and see a vintage photo of the site juxtaposed next to an image as it appears today.
* A time machine built into a replica of a trolley car offers over 40 video vignettes of famous Springfieldians and significant historical events.
* An immersive re-enactment chamber allows the user to experience the Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt shoot-out in 1865.
* The 66-foot long timeline and map of the iconic Mother Road are unique, and neon signs will guide you on a vintage trip along Route 66.
